  The Kentucky Mountain Horse

A horse that posses a gentle temperament, versatility, intelligence and a fantastic disposition seems too good to be true. That is unless you are talking about the Kentucky Mountain Horse. A horse that is a " do it all horse". Originally bred in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky to meet the demands of the everyday farm life. A breed considered a glide ride, with an ambling four beat gait that is as smooth as silk. Aside from the gait, it is the disposition that sets the breed apart from any other breed in the world.      The Kentucky Mountain Horse is the ultimate trail horse. Being able to gait instead of trot enables you to ride for hours on the trails without being uncomfortable.
The Kentucky Mountain Horse Association also recognizes the Spotted Mountain Saddle Horse Association. This association includes Mountain Horses who posses the same disposition and gait as the Kentucky Mountain Horse, but these horses have a variety of colors and spots on the body.
After experiencing and riding a Kentucky Mountain Horse, you will see that there is something truly special about this horse. Maybe it's the ambling four beat gait, the variety of colors or just the shear grace and beauty, but you can sense the difference. After riding the gait, one thing you will ask is : "Why trot anymore?" The comfort the horse provides is great for bad backs, older riders, and people looking to ride for hours comfortably. There is no horse like a Mountain Horse!

Why I Prefer the Kentucky  Mountain Horse

By: Michael Michno

After being around horses all my life, I have finally found the breed that I consider "perfect". There are thousands and thousands of Quarter Horses out there, likewise Thoroughbreds and Arabians. All of which each have their own qualities. But none of which have all the qualities. That is where the Kentucky Mountain Horse comes in for me. This is a horse that can do it all, from trail rides to competition, field trials to pleasure riding. These horses are a true one of a kind.
The best quality of the Mountain Horse is the disposition the horses have. They are very willing and eager to learn. They think before they act, which makes them a pleasure to work with. These horses are the perfect trail horse. They have great stamina which allows them to be on the trails longer, and they have a smooth four beat gait which makes trail riding comfortable. You can gait for long periods of time and cover much ground without ever feeling sore or feeling the need to stop and adjust.
The Kentucky Mountain Horse is my preferred horse. There is nothing like a horse with a gait, versatility and a great disposition. This breed is the Cadillac of horses.
